GETTING STARTED -

1. You should already have the DEMO version, so when you receive the ELX1 full version software, you should already be good to go.

2. Then be sure you have your COM port set properly in the ELX1Settings.txt file (see below).

3. You probably need to attach a RS422 adapter to the non-PC end of the dongle and then cable that to the RS422-control port (input) on the LX1 or your RS422 VTR. Be sure you don't put the RS422 adapter right onto your COM port, the dongle needs to be the 'closest' thing to the COM port. Your RS422 adapter will work correctly when it is 'chained' to our ELX1 serial port dongle.

4. Modify the ELX1Settings.txt file if necessary so the COM port is correct for your setup.

5. Run ELX1.exe (the main program).

6.  DEMO VERSION LIMITATIONS:

a. The program will run for 3 minutes and then stop. You can run it again.
b. You are limited to a very short LX1 EDL creation process.
c. The SCRIPT function button is disabled.

SECTION A: DOCUMENTATION ON SETTINGS OPTIONS

DON'T REMOVE ANY OF THESE SETTINGS LINES EVEN IF YOU THINK THEY DON'T PERTAIN TO YOU.

EDIT CAREFULLY - DON'T ADD INADVERTENT SPACES, PUNCTUATION MARKS, ETC.

BE SURE YOU 'SAVE' THE ELX1Settings.txt FILE AFTER EDITING.

YOU MUST CLOSE AND RE-START THE ELX1/PLX1 PROGRAM TO LET IT SEE ANY NEW
SETTINGS. THE Settings.txt FILE IS READ ONLY ONCE AT THE TIME THE PROGRAM
STARTS.

**********************
WARNING: DO NOT START MODIFYING SETTINGS UNLESS YOU *NEED* TO!
WARNING: DO NOT MODIFIY SETTINGS WITOUT READING THE DOCUMENTATION BELOW!!
**********************

**********************
IMPORTANT!!!
When editing the ELX1Settings.txt file, do so carefully. Note that on the right-hand side of each '=' sign, the letters are not case-sensitive, but the names of the settings entries (e.g. 'VCRType') *ARE* case-sensitive (don't edit those, anyway).
**********************

**********************
IMPORTANT!!!
If there is a choice for YES or NO, ELX1 will default to NO unless the word YES is present. YOu could type 'hello' and it would mean NO.
**********************

BASIC LX1 and RS422 VTR SETTINGS -

1. COMPort=COM1 - you may change this to COM2, etc. for your app.

2. VCRType=LX1 - DO not change this if you are controlling an LX1. It sets up some special features for use with the LX1 device. If you are using an RS422 VTR, you can change this to:

VCRType=RS422
or
VCRType=VTR
or
VCRType=VCR

When you use a VTR, you'll see a somewhat different GUI than when using an LX1. Many VTRs support variable speed playback, single-frame jog, etc. which are not supported on the LX1.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONAL SETTINGS FOR ALL VERSIONS -

1. UserNote=xxxxxxxxxx is a string of up to 10 ordinary characters that will appear on the GUI (useful to distinguish multiple copies of ELX1 running at the same time)

2. UseClipboard=NO - if you change this to YES then *every* timecode 'read' will transfer to the PC's 'clipboard' and you can 'paste' it into some other program like a text editor, etc. This slows down your PC a bit and also prevents you from using the 'clipboard' to cut and paste other things.

3. StopOnExit=YES tells the program to stop the LX1 play when you quit.
If you set it to 'No' then the LX1 will continue to play if that's
what you were doing, etc.

4. Verbose=NO tells the program to perform most operations without sending a running commentary to the 'DOS' window. If you want to see extra information, you can change this to:

Verbose=YES

SPECIAL SETTINGS FOR USE WITH THE LX1

***********************
WARNING: LEAVE THESE SETTINGS ALONE UNLESS YOU NEED TO CHANGE THEM
***********************

1. Finalize=YES means that your LX1 EDLs created with ELX1 will end with a 'FNL' line. You can change this to NO if you wish to skip the finalize step when recording to DVD-RW.

2. Initialize=YES means that your LX1 EDLs created with ELX1 will start with a 'INI' line. You can change this to NO if you wish to bypass the initialization step when recording to a DVD-RW that already has material recorded on it.

3. RECMode=STOP means that your LX1 EDL creation steps will start off with the STOP at the end of each line. You can change this to PAUSE if you wish to end each line with a PAUSE instead. Of course once you're working on an EDL conversion in ELX1, you can switch back and forth between these settings at will (using the PS and ST buttons at the bottom of the EDLMaker window).

The following is a very special function and you should *NOT* change it unless you have a specific type of EDL that will be useful for it.

4. AutoChapter=YES means that if you 'AutoProcess' a source EDL in the EDLMaker window, then the first line of timecode will be set up as a

REC xx:xx:xx:xx yy:yy:yy:yy STOP

(to create one DVD Title)

and all subsequent lines will be

CHP xx:xx:xx:xx

entries with a single timecode.

This can be useful only if you are recording one long segment of material as a single DVD 'Title' and wish to have all other entries from your source EDL simply indicate chapter marks.

This can greatly speed up EDL conversion for motion picture telecine dailies. A single click of the 'AutoProcess' button will create a single-title, multi-chapter LX1 EDL all in one go.

If you don't want the AutoProcess function to work this way, then set this to:

AutoChapter=NO

and it will be have in a more conventional fashion with a full

REC xx:xx:xx:xx yy:yy:yy:yy STOP (or PAUSE)

on each line.

SPECIAL PLX1 NETWORK VERSION OPTIONAL SETTINGS -

The network-enabled version of ELX1 is called PLX1.

1. NetSocket=2001 and only pertain to the PLX1 (networking) version,
but don't remove them in any case. NetSocket is the network TCP/IP socket
you wish to use to remotely control the PLX1 program over your network.

2.AutoEnable=YES

AutoEnable lets you choose whether remote users can connect immediately after the PLX1 program starts or whether you wish to enable them manually
from the 'Let Client Connect' button on the PLX1 GUI.

SPECIAL MCS-ENABLED PROGRAM OPTIONAL SETTINGS -

The following two items only pertain to special MCS-enabled software versions.

1. MCS=No means you are not using the JLCooper MCS-enabled version of ELX1 or PLX1. You need to purchase that version if you intend to use the JL Cooper MCS2 to control the VTR and it will need its own COM port connection to the PC for ELX1/PLX1 to work. Don't change this.

2. MCSCOMPort=COM2 is there as a placeholder for those who are using the
MCS-enabled version of ELX1/PLX1, but it only has meaning for them. It is
the setting to tell ELX1/PLX1 which COM port you're using for the JLCooper
MCS2.
